Pia’s soundscapes are possibly the most beautiful blog posts I’ve ever seen. Her pictures from Paris and Amsterdam are coupled with city sounds that were recorded along with the photos. It is precisely this kind of serene experience that makes me dream of visiting these cities. I also love her canal boathouse! It’s so charming, I want to live in it..
Sometimes I can actually escape within my own living room. Rainy summer evenings are the best… I would seriously just listen to the rain and the cars driving by. It’s so hard and rare for someone to capture these moments of simple bliss.
The soundscapes remind me of a series of photos I saw at MoMA New York last fall, called “Olive Trees after the Heat,” by JoAnn Verburg. They were polytychs made up of really large photos of an olive grove during a foggy morning. The display filled up a smaller room, so standing in it, I felt like I was really surrounded by these trees. I really felt connected to the artist because I’ve been to olive groves in Provence, and it was just surreal. I didn’t want to leave.
To me, this is capturing a moment and sharing it. Such wonderful artists. I remember telling myself that I must create something similar to decorate my home one day, hopefully with my own photos.
I almost forgot about that moment at the museum… that’s what prompted me to ramble about art and inspiration. This post is to keep me from forgetting again. I kind of regret not buying the book at MoMA.. :(
On a related note, I found an in-depth coverage by NYTimes while looking around. It has a nice audio slideshow about the artist’s works.

who is this person… and how do you go about pursuing such a life of the arts??? seems nearly storybook-like to me, yet clearly she does exist and can sustain some sort of livelihood.
maybe some life guides should help. “how to become an artist living on a boat in europe (and still make enough money to achieve relative comfort, joy, and stability).”
